If you have no prior knowledge of bookkeeping or accounting, and want to start your bookkeeping venture, your logical options would be:
Option A - Start on your own.
- Enroll for a learning course in bookkeeping. There are a lot of such courses available. You would have to preselect an accounting software package such as Quickbooks, peachtree etc. The selection of the accounting software package would primarily depend on what accounting software your clients or potential clients are already using, if any. If you don't have any potential clients to start with, we would suggest you to go for Quickbooks accounting software as it is the most widely used software.
- Purchase an accounting software package such as Quickbooks.
- Once you have learned accounting and bookkeeping with an accounting software package, you will have to source clients. Get the word out with your friends and acquaintances of your offering bookkeeping services. Visit local businesses and offer your services. You can also visit local CPAs and professional bookkeepers. Advertise in the local media. A lot of CPAs also outsource their bookkeeping.
To quote the charges, you can first inquire of the running rates in your locality. The charges could be based on time i.e. $X/hour, or it could be based on the number of transactions, or you could also negotiate a lumpsum amount.
Note: For deciding what rates to charge, do not try to benchmark our rates. You will not be able to afford them.
